Elements of a Parking Lot

Why Road Striping for Parking Lots is a Smart Investment

Parking lot designs are smarter than you think. What are the parts of a parking lot?

Parking lots are not just swathes of asphalt with some parking space lines on them. If you have recruited a civil engineer to design one for your commercial property, you know that designing a parking lot takes a great deal of thought and skill to make it work. At Reliable Contracting, we can follow your parking lot plan and make it a reality for your business in Maryland. What are the elements of a parking lot that we handle?

4 Elements of a Parking Lot

Pavement Design

The parking lot must be large enough for a full house to park their vehicles outside your building. The lot must also be easy to navigate; it must flow well and have clear directions to prevent accidents. A parking lot is usually rectangular and spans the length of the building. It may also incorporate medians, concrete parking stops, traffic signs, and angled parking spots. All parking lots must be ADA-compliant.

Concrete Curbs and Gutters

Concrete curbs may line the parking lot to give it structural stability and to mark off the point between the asphalt and the landscaping. Concrete is also a practical material for creating gutters along the curb. Concrete curbs may also form traffic islands in the middle of the parking lot.

Stormwater Management Systems

Parking lots are graded to prevent flooding; their slope allows stormwater to drain smoothly at a controlled rate into the nearest stormwater management systems. If it suits your parking lot, that system may be a series of storm drain inlets that ultimately lead to the city’s stormwater utility pipes.

The stormwater runoff might also drain into a stormwater management system that incorporates plants and gravel, such as a subsurface gravel wetland.

Landscaping

Parking lots may have landscaping as part of the design. It could be through a stormwater system, a rain garden median, or simply an aesthetic planting within a traffic island.
