Ins and Outs of Permeable Pavement

Is permeable pavement right for your paving needs?

Traditional asphalt has served us well for many decades, but permeable pavement could offer advantages that other solutions can’t. Reliable Contracting is familiar with permeable and traditional asphalt alike and is happy to work with your business to meet your paving needs.

What Is Permeable Pavement?

Permeable pavement can be asphalt, concrete, or pavers. It has a porous surface that allows water to drain straight through it into a basin filled with stones below, where it can drain out at an even pace.

Applications of Permeable Pavement

Permeable pavements apply but are not limited to the following constructions:

  • Driveways
  • Parking lots
  • Sidewalks
  • High-traffic areas
  • Low-traffic areas

Pros and Cons of Permeable Pavement

Prevents Flooding and Erosion

The reason to consider installing permeable pavement is to prevent flooding and erosion. Permeable pavement is a solution to stormwater drainage problems. Like a French drain for a residential yard, it collects rainwater quickly so that it does not cause water damage to the property.

Will Not Ice Over

Because water seeps right through the surface, you won’t have to worry as much about ice forming on its surface. Even with this benefit, it could be safer to apply a deicing chemical before winter storms just in case. Do not use sand, kitty litter, or any product that could clog the permeable pavement’s pores.

Can’t Withstand Constant Heavy Loads

Perhaps the biggest downside of permeable pavement is that it is not as strong as traditional pavements. Its porous surface with an underground reservoir makes it more structurally fragile than a traditional driveway or parking lot with a solid foundation and multiple layers. For that reason, it is not the best solution for highways, airport runways, and other heavy-duty traffic areas.

Needs Specialized Maintenance

Permeable pavements need different maintenance from traditional pavements. Managers must be diligent to prevent clogging so that the water will continue to drain properly and the property won’t flood. Understanding what needs to be done will make the job much simpler, though, and professionals like Reliable Contracting can help!
