Nighttime Work Zone Safety for Drivers

Drivers, keep safe! These tips for nighttime driving around construction sites work!

Driving a vehicle of any kind takes months and years of practice before you can be adept to the most difficult road conditions, including driving at night. Add to that a road work zone, and everyone needs to focus even more on putting their great driving skills to practice. When driving around road construction, keep these nighttime work zone safety tips in mind.

Work Zone Safety Tips for Drivers

Slow Down

When you see signs for road work ahead, prepare to slow down! It is a lot harder to make controlled, split-second decisions when you are driving fast. Follow the speed limit signs for the work zone and be patient.

Be Alert

Road construction sites have moving machines and workers. Always stay alert so that you do not miss if a construction worker or vehicle happens to appear near your lane or, by some accident, on it.

Follow the Signs and Avoid Road Work Zones If Possible

Naturally, it is the law and for everyone’s safety that you obey road work signs for direction and speed. If the site guides you to a detour, take that rather than drive around the site, even if it looks like there is room for you. If you know that construction will be on your route, plan ahead for delays or find an alternate route if possible.

Nighttime Driving Tips

Be Alert

What about driving around or through a road work zone at night? Nighttime driving is even riskier due to the higher rates of distracted, drowsy driving and impaired driving. If you are traveling with someone more awake than you, please let them drive instead. Do your best to stay awake and focused on the road.

Be Patient

Do not rush or get impatient in nighttime driving. Take your time to navigate the roads; your safety is more important than getting to your destination faster.

Keep Your Sights Clear

Lastly, do your best to increase road visibility. Make sure your car’s interior is not too bright, ensure your vision is clear, use high beams when necessary, and keep your windshield clean. Turn off your high beams when you see oncoming traffic.
