How to Become a Skilled Pipelayer
Most skilled pipelayers work their way up through on-the-job training as a laborer. They work alongside skilled pipelayers, equipment operators and foremen, learning the necessary skills for a successful project. The pipelayer has several responsibilities on a daily basis. In addition to laying pipes for sanitation and storm sewers, water mains, and drains, a pipelayer is also responsible for positioning pipes, sealing joints and grading trenches. A pipelayer needs to be able to read blueprints and know how to use instruments like lasers and transit levels to ensure slopes are conforming to requirements. An experienced pipelayer will also know how to perform maintenance on old pipelines or swap out old pipes for new ones.
