Boy scouts raced their handmade cars in the Reliable Contracting lobby while younger siblings cheered them on.
Well, miniature drag racing, that is. On February 4, the newly-formed Boy Scout Troop 1 and the West Anne Arundel County Rotary teamed up for the First Annual Troop 1 Blast Car Challenge, which took place right in the shared lobby of Reliable Contracting and Chaney Enterprises’ lobby in Crofton! Each individual scout hand crafted their own “blast car”, a small car that uses a CO2 cartridge to propel itself forward. 14 scouts ranging from 10-14 years old raced their handmade cars down the track of the lobby while their younger siblings cheered them on from the sidelines.
Boy Scout Troop 1 formed just 11 months ago. This world-class youth program focuses on teaching responsibility, community, self-reliance, and patriotism while instilling an interest in Science, Math, Engineering, Technology, and an appreciation for the outdoors. The brand new boy scout troop has already won 2015 Gold Level Journey to Excellence Award from the Boy Scouts of America. The boy scouts meet every Thursday night in the Founders’ Building Training Room, but this time they needed a 100-foot straight-away for racing their cars. Reliable Contracting was happy to provide a space for these young scouts to utilize! Daniel Clark, the scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 1, “Without the generous offer from Reliable to use their training space, we would find it very hard to reach the levels of success that we have.” The event was a huge success all around; the scouts learned the value of science and of constructing something with their own hands, and they also got to celebrate their teamwork and ingenuity in a fun race that everyone enjoyed.
