How to Stay Safe When Working with Asphalt

Ensure your next asphalt project runs smoothly with these important practices.

Asphalt is used for a broad range of projects. It is an extremely versatile in how it can be utilized. On top of that, it is durable and not overly expensive. It is considered to be one of the safer building materials to handle. However, even with that said asphalt does pose some safety risks. Here are some of the things you can do to stay safe when working with asphalt.

Don’t Overexert Yourself

Asphalt is heavy material. If you are not careful, you can easily hurt yourself if you try to lift broken asphalt. If you are someone who has a bad back, you may want to think twice before trying to move a large chunk of asphalt on your own. You are better off getting some help from someone rather than straining yourself by trying to do it on your own. If you are going to attempt to lift a heavy material on your own, make sure you have correct form. You want your back to be straight and not arched. You also do not want to turn your waist when you are carrying a heavy material like asphalt. Remember: lift with your knees!

Protect Your Eyes

People take for granted their eyesight. For whatever reason people do not feel the need to wear protective eyewear when doing construction and home improvement projects. You do not want to get broken asphalt or aggregate in your eyes. When doing any type of aggregate demo, little pieces of dust and debris fly into the air and can become harmful. If you do get the debris in your eye, the consequences could be disastrous. Protective eyewear is not only necessary for the asphalt but the tools you will be using to complete the job. Heavy machinery and other sharp tools can be extremely hazardous to one’s eyes.

Protect Your Skin

Fresh asphalt will burn the skin. It is important to always wear an adequate amount of protective clothing to prevent direct contact with it. For this reason, gloves are an absolute must, in addition to long sleeves and pants. Fresh asphalt is extremely hot. Direct contact with the skin will cause severe burns. If this were to happen, you would need to receive medical attention right away

When in doubt, leave it to the professionals. Call a local paving contractor in your area to eliminate any risk on your part.
